Meet Me On Camera Three
Chad and I are unabashed tv-holics (and I'm NOT talking socially or intellectually redeeming PBS shows). We are also pathologically overbooked. So we just got around to watching the last episode of the "Daily Show" (and if I have to tell you that's with Jon Stewart you probably have no interest in reading this) a couple of days ago.
It's funny how much a tv show can seep into your life. Watching The Daily Show has been a constant part of our lives for the past sixteen years, so I have to share my reflections:
It's funny how much a tv show can seep into your life. Watching The Daily Show has been a constant part of our lives for the past sixteen years, so I have to share my reflections:
- It's obvious, but must be said: this really brings home the passage of time, and yes, makes me feel old. We even watched the show when Craig Kilborn was the host.
- Time and memory are very malleable, and it's strange how a television show can be such a maker of one's own personal history. I'm surprised that Jon didn't start hosting the Daily Show until we moved to Minnesota (I thought it was during our Iowa Era). I also can't believe that my mom died not that long after Jon started hosting the Daily Show (in 2000).
- It was so cool that so many former correspondents were on the last episode. I can't believe how many talented people have been part of the show.
- We also remember Nancy Carrell...but when she was Nancy Walls. I just learned in "researching" this that she married Steve Carrell. MIND BLOWN.
- Jessica Williams is ridiculously attractive.
- Arby's used to be one of my favorite fast food restaurants. When we first experienced it in the big city when I was around 10 I was quite impressed. I'm still not sure why Jon decided to pick on Arby's over all the others. If I knew the world was going to end tomorrow, I might just make a run for a cheesy roast beef and some curly fries.
- I'm most impressed and moved by the genuine respect and affection Jon and his co-workers seemed to have for each other. There's nothing like the feeling of a community pulling together to accomplish something they believe in to make me want to order a Jane Seymour Open Hearts necklace. (This is Amy-speak for I got emotional and cried. Perhaps I will explain in a future blog post).
- BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN! From what I can tell (and that's another weird aspect of tv is that I feel like I know Jon Stewart personally and of course, I don't) Jon is a huge Bruce fan, and as a fellow Bruce fan, I can only imagine how awesome this was for Jon. And I love that Max Weinberg is a happy drummer.
- ...and you ARE born to run, Jon. Yes, that makes no literal sense, but total metaphorical sense.
- The only thing that would have made the final episode better was if Stephen Colbert sang. Watching one of the network nightly shows will be a total change in behavior of Chamy, but we might just give it a try because Stephen Colbert is so awesome.
Back in in 2010, I actually attended a taping of the Daily Show with my friend Marcia, who arranged everything. So here it is, your moments of Zen...
