Start Me Up

Once again, I am making a foray into the world of blogging. (Yes, I have had some ill-fated blogs in the past; that's another story). I don't have a clear or compelling reason to start a blog, but I keep thinking about having a blog, so I'm just going to give it a go and see what happens. I think I hope it will be a way to capture some experiences, thoughts and memories, and maybe even fashion them into stories (or at least anecdotes) in an attempt to appreciate them more. Life seems to go by in such a whirlwind and maybe if I take a little time to write about it I will be a little more aware and reflective. Now also seems like a good time to start a blog since I have more free time as I'm not currently acting in any shows.

Why blog when I could just keep a journal? After all, I don't think I have much to say that will be of interest to others, so this is a pretty narcissistic endeavor. Still, there is something that feels more tangible about blogging rather than journaling, even if I am the only one who ever reads it. I do aspire to keep journaling (and to write in my journal more) and to be more thorough in capturing all those random, fragmented, and not necessarily pretty thoughts. But I do hope that writing fuels more writing (and thinking and meaning-making) so that having a blog will complement my journaling efforts.

So what is "Hotter Than a Pepper Sprout"? Again, this blog doesn't have a theme or a purpose, and I am likely to write about seemingly random things that I'm excited about or momentarily catch my interest, including community theater, pets, food, wine, Dr. Who, Unitarian Universalism, books, music, and playing drums in band camp. This is definitely not a work blog or a librarian blog, although those subjects may come up, too, but hopefully in totally professionally appropriate, not-offensive to anyone, ways. (If you would like more details, ask me about the parenthetical sentence at the beginning of this post sometime after you have bought me a drink). I tried very hard to come up with a blog name that wasn't too cute or too obscure or too embarrassing, but most blog names I could think of were already taken. So in mixture of exasperation and desperation, I went with "Hotter than a Pepper Sprout." It's a lyric from the song "Jackson" (made famous by Johnny Cash and June Carter) and has special meaning for my husband, Chad, and me. We recently did a duet of "Jackson" at one of our band camp gigs and even named our new kittens Pepper and Sprout after that song. So it's a title that feels symbolic of several of the things that energize me and of how those things can intertwine in wonderful ways.

Alas, I do realize now that choosing the title "Hotter Than a Pepper Sprout" may suggest this is going to be a menopause blog about hot flashes. Oh well. If I maintain this blog long enough, it might also be about that in the not-too-distant future.
